Well, a couple things off the bat:
Is your question about how to use the specific software, music composition in general, coming up with ideas, or what?
If you're wondering specifically about the software, I wouldn't be the one to ask because I've never used Garage Band or FL Studio. xD But there should be a number of good video tutorials online if that's what you're looking for.
If you're wondering more about how do you actually compose music: how acquainted are you with music theory (basics like note names/durations/intervals/time signatures/keys/chords/scales)? If not very, you might want to brush up on that before doing anything serious; there are lots of easy-to-follow lessons online with a quick Google search. Alternatively, if you know the basics but want to branch out a bit (do some reharmonizing or other substantial changes) it'd still be good to get a refresher.
As for ideas: are you interested primarily in remixing, or making original songs? What genres/styles are you thinking of?

For beginners is Synth Font/Synth Font 1 a good way. It was my first MIDI editor programm, and it's very easy. You can Change the Soundfont or DLS files. It's an freeware, but not Synth Font 2. Don't use Synth Font 2, because this software isn't free and is harder to understand. I give you bellow examples, how it looks: This here is the interface, where you can change the instrument presets and soundfonts (SF2) And this here is the Piano Roll, where you can change the notes of the MIDI. If want know, what that is for a song: It's the Battle Squadron In-Game Theme ;-)
