They seem much more powerful than other encounter themes. They might play when talking to the player or when you are about to battle him/her. They are almost songs within themselves.
However, sometimes I overlook them and forget that they exist. I think, correct me, only Blue/Green, Steven/Wallace, Cynthia, and Alder had encounter themes. I have no idea why.
Do you like any of these themes?
I like Cynthia's encounter theme.

I like Steven/Wallace's and Alder's.( that theme is probably the only part I like about Alder personally ^^; ) Alder's really contrasted nicely with most of the B/W/B2/W2 soundtrack IMO. And it had a lot more to "tell" in comparison to the other encounter themes IMO !

For the most part, I actually like the encounter themes more than the Champion Battle themes. Blue's encounter theme was pretty snobby yet driven and matched the character's personality pretty well. Steven's encounter theme is also powerful and driven, perfect for a Steel enthusiast like him; however, I feel that the theme does NOT work for Wallace at all. Wallace needs a more elegant yet flamboyant encounter theme, in my opinion. Cynthia's encounter theme pretty much automatically gets my full respect simply because it's a really well-done piano-only piece, and I WANT TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY IT. Seriously, it's dark and mysterious, and it's so beautiful. I don't know that much about Cynthia, though, so I can't really tell if it fits her. Alder's theme is really interesting, and I feel that it is the most characterizing out of all of the Champion encounter themes (with Blue's being a close second); I love how the composers chose to give the encounter theme a personality outside of "POWERFUL MUSIC FOR POWERFUL PERSON!" like most of the others are, and I love this one for that reason. I'm not saying that I don't like Steven's or Cynthia's encounter themes; I do like them. I just hope that, if they continue the trend of giving Champions encounter themes, they are more personalized to the character rather than just "THERE IS A FINAL BOSS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU".

Also, With Wallace's new appearance, has he lost that elegance? Now that I know of. But I didn't have the music on at that point either, so I don't know if he had an encounter theme. I doubt he did, though.

Also, I don't think Iris nor Diantha have encounter themes, which kind of sucks. Their battle music is pretty characterizing, I'll give them that. But whether or not they were trying to keep the pre-battle dialogue tense by keeping it as the Pokémon League theme, I personally feel that it punctuates how little presence they had in the games in which they were Champion. But that's just my opinion.

Diantha better have a pre-battle theme in Pokemon Z. Or we get a new champion.
