Given that collaborating is likely one of the key functions this site can offer for all us beautiful budding musicians, it's important to know ahead of time what hardware and software everyone uses. Arguably the most important element, the DAW, houses the entire project, so it is essential to know what your buddies are using. Operating between two different DAW's can prove to be a very challenging experience. Plus, it's just a good chance to share more of your setup with everyone! Win-win! I use Cubase 7, myself. What is your weapon of choice?

I specifically bought a MacBook so I could use Garageband. I used to screw around with it on my dad's Mac when I was little and got familiar with its interface so when I started remixing I wanted to use something I was already familiar with. I run Windows normally so I'd like for there to be a good free DAW for Windows, but all the free ones are terrible. I liked the trial of Cubase but it's a bit expensive for me at the moment, so I just reboot into OS X when I feel like working with music.

What comes to making a collab with someone who's using different DAW than you can be a challenge but it can be pretty easily done with audio clips too. Just export every pattern as an audio clip and send them to the other one who continues working on the remix on the other DAW. If either one wants to make changes to the song, it can be done with the DAW and then one can export a new audio file. Of course I haven't done one myself but I'd think it goes pretty much like that. Not sure if I managed to tell this in a way that makes any sense but whatever.
Anyways, I use FL Studio.

As for me, I'm not exactly the "producer-type," but I do plan to start somewhere.
Recently, I purchased KORG DSN-12 on the 3DS (the sales, man, THE SAAALES), hoping to plan on using it in making cool tracks like most of you guys. I'm still experimenting with it (pushing all the buttons and turning all the knobs is fun).

Logic Pro X is my DAW of choice. Kontakt 5 is a sweet addition, and I've got some extra samples from around the interwebs. Totally worth the investment.

I use Logic X myself but I'm not very talented in the music field so I can't do much with it.

FL 10 here. It's done everything I've ever wanted it to do, virtually, and can't see myself switching.

That's some awesome stuff. I had the demo of FL some years back, but wasn't enough into music-making to go anywhere with it. I hear a lot of praise directed at FL.

Yeah, lifetime free updates if you buy it. I just hear a lot of bad things about FL Studio haha. People think it's a shit DAW just because the demo is easily accessible. But quite many professional producers use it these days.

It is unfortunate for those who think a DAW (or any software, for that matter) is poor simply because it is cheaper or easier to demo/work in than another. FL Studio has the capacity to take any serious musician just as far as someone using one of the "higher-end" DAWs. Its reputation in that regard reminds me somewhat of Sony Vegas... though quite loosely. I'm sure it has its quirks, but I don't know of any DAW that doesn't. It's a matter of preference and comfort, at the end of the day.

I'm currently taking an Introduction to Pro Tools class at my university, and if you have a 'professional' DAW, you can complete the assignments from home without using the lab at school. So I asked my professor if Fruity Loops counted as a 'professional' DAW. Of course he said "no", and went on to say that he considers Fruity Loops more of an "idea machine" than an actual DAW. He also compared its functionality to that of Garageband's. I was like

"Idea machine"
What a fraud.

Some producers (like deadmau5 for example) use FL Studio just to sketch out the ideas. This is due the really great piano roll FL Studio has to offer. Calling the DAW just an idea machine though just shows that you know pretty much nothing.

I agree it's way more powerful than Garageband; it's just way harder to get sound to play at first than in GB. I don't know what he meant by "idea machine" though...lawl...

No one cares-warning!
I mainly use Rosegarden, which is available exclusively on Linux (for free). Its audio capabilities are weak, but it's great with MIDI, so it fits in nicely in my setup (involving using my keyboard as a sampler). That being said, I'm always on the lookout for alternatives.
