Pokemon Yellow was my first Pokemon game. I remember bringing my Gameboy to school when I was in 3rd grade or something and having a classmate ask me if I wanted to trade my Gameboy for his Coke... A COKE!!
I thought it was kinda cool having multiple "rivals" in X and Y (and in B/W), but, to be honest, I miss having a jerk as a rival. I want to be able to completely destroy them every time without feeling somewhat guilty. haha

Technically it was colloseum 2 at a friend's house. I beat them using a staru.
I really liked it when I had played diamond
The newer, 6th gen games are being more vibrant on the instruments while lacking, how do I put this, content in the songs. Also, Azurite = new 7th gen.

My first was Blue Rescue Team, which I got as a kid since I liked the anime. Didn't even know there were main series games. Then I got Diamond PMD will always hold a special place in my heart though <3

My parents didn't really know about Pokemon when I was little, so even though they got me a Gameboy I didn't have Pokemon until much later. Right after my friend got Ruby, she gave me her copy of Gold to play. Then I saved up for a GBA and when she got Diamond she gave me Emerald. Then I got Diamond from my sister (my parents paid for it) and Explorers of Time from the same friend who gave me the other two. The first game I actually bought for myself was White, which I got a few weeks after it was released. The first game I got at midnight release was X (Y came in the mail a few days later) and AlphaSapphire (Ruby came in the mail later that day). I've had a game from every generation except for Gen I, so I feel like I missed out slightly, but I've played FireRed so I at least know the story.

Played Yellow back in 1999 as my first pokemon game, the last one was White 2 because I really couldn't get into the franchise. pretty much the same here, thought i was playing yellow in 2005 and stopped at white because my DS was getting too fucked up to play. never got myself a 3DS...

Wow, how did I miss this thread <_<
I started around 2001 (I think? Not entirely sure, I was a really little tyke) with Pokémon Silver (Totodile, woo), and on a Pikachu & Pichu GameBoy Color to boot. Sadly, though, I misplaced the cartridge somewhere between my friend's sister stealing it, getting it back a while later (Ampharos is one of my favorites by proxy now as I finished the story with their team <_<), and moving several times. In the midst of that, though, I branched out to pretty much every game available at the time (Hey You! Pikachu, Pokémon Snap, Pokémon Red, Pokémon Stadium, etc.) and pretty much followed that trend until the late GameCube/DS era (when I stopped getting most of the spin-offs) and today (at which point I've also stopped consistently buying both of each set).
The later games are pretty good in my opinion, and the ease of use is definitely worth bringing the older gens up to speed, but really the only improvements are graphics and gameplay mechanics (X/Y had an awesome variety in Pokémon distribution, for instance). The story has definitely been suffering lately (B2/W2 and X/Y, anybody), but hopefully with the extra bits that they added to OR/AS it'll get a bit better over time.
Favorites would probably be Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness. They brought the main series mechanics with a huge improvement in graphics, music, and story, as well as taking the "darker and edgier" cliché in a direction that actually worked pretty well (other than the corniness of "unlock a Pokémon's heart" and stuff, but hey, still not as egegrious as Kingdom Hearts); XD lightened the tone a bit again, but it was better balanced and, if I remember correctly, a bit longer (and who doesn't love Shadow Lugia). As for "proper" main series games, G/S/C and R/S/E take it for nostalgia, though I've played through those worlds enough that I'm pretty much sick to death of them.

First was Pokemon Gold, next was Pokemon ranger, and PMD.
